IBPO National President David J. Holway released a statement today responding to President Barack Obama’s remarks regarding the Henry Louis Gates, Jr. incident in Cambridge, Mass., calling Mr. Obama’s remarks “totally inappropriate.” He also wrote a letter to Mr. Obama, seeking an apology for those remarks.
The Statement:
The President’s comments on the situation regarding the interaction between a personal friend and the Cambridge, Massachusetts, police were totally inappropriate.
Mr. Obama’s use of the bully pulpit of the presidency, and his choice of verbiage on a matter about which he admits he does not have all the facts, is unbelievable.
The President has alienated public safety officers across the country by his comments.
The police official involved in the Cambridge incident is a well thought of professional and is an upstanding member of his community. He and his three brothers are all public safety professionals.
As an aside, the President’s comments on this matter have undone the purpose of his press conference; instead of giving his health care plan a boost, all the chatter after his press conference is around the Cambridge incident.
