IBPO Donates $25,000 Towards Reward to Catch Atlanta Cop-Killer

February 22, 2010

The International Brotherhood of Police Officers has donated $25,000 towards the reward for information leading to the conviction of the people who shot and killed an Atlanta police officer in 1980.

Interim Atlanta Police Chief George Turner announced the creation of the award at a press conference on February 19, 2010, exactly thirty years and three days after 31-year-old Officer Alfred Johnson was slain in a grocery store hold-up. Turner said that police discovered the case files last year when the department moved its headquarters to a new location. Much to his surprise, said Turner, he learned that the case had never been solved. When IBPO leaders learned of the case, they offered to help.

“Officer Johnson’s family has waited a long time for justice, and we wanted to see that they get it,” said David J. Holway, IBPO national president, of the union’s donation. “I hope the reward will encourage witnesses to come forward and help the police solve this case.” Thanks to the IBPO and a generous donation from Crime Stoppers Atlanta, the reward fund now totals $35,000 at press time.

Detectives reportedly have strong leads in the case and hope that the reward will entice anyone who can identify the two masked men involved in the robbery, or their driver.

Anyone with information about the Johnson case should call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477.
